The promenade along the Obertrave offers a magnificent view of Lübeck's old town.
Detailed description
The benches along the promenade invite you to look around and linger. However, as this area is lowered and very close to the banks of the Trave, this idyllic area is considered to be at risk of flooding.
In November 1872, the water rose particularly high during a Baltic Sea storm surge: to this day, it is the worst known flood on the Baltic Sea, with a high water mark of 3.3 meters above sea level. The flood claimed 271 lives along the entire Baltic coast and left 15,000 people homeless.
A catastrophe that is commemorated by a high water mark on building number 8 on the corner of Pagönnienstraße.
