The stone figure shows an old man crouching in fear.
Detailed description
If you look to the top of the outside of St. Mary's Chapel of Letters, you can see this weathered stone figure. According to legend, an old, stone-rich merchant did not want to die and sent death away every time it came to get him. But at some point he was so old that he had outlived his children and grandchildren and no longer knew anyone.
When he was ready to die but Death wouldn't come back for him, the merchant looked for him at night at St. Mary's Church. He climbed a ladder under the roof and waited until he had shrunk and petrified.
He can be seen today as a stone statue at this very spot.
